Heart Surgical Products Overview
In the United States, thousands of people undergo heart surgery every day. In 2006 (the latest data provided by the American Heart Association), surgeons performed nearly 448,000 coronary artery bypass grafts. Even with a shortage of donor organs, more than 2,000 people have undergone heart transplants. Because the heart is constantly beating, the challenges faced by cardiac surgery are not available in other types of surgery. Not only will it move, but it will not cause brain damage if it stops for more than a few minutes.
Two important medical advances made heart surgery possible:
- Heart-lung machine, responsible for the work of the heart during the operation
- Body cooling technology makes the operation time longer without causing brain damage
This machine is also called a cardiopulmonary bypass machine. It pumps blood when the heart stops and adds oxygen to it before pumping blood through the body.
During the operation, the perfusion technician or blood flow expert operates the machine to monitor the blood flow operation to ensure the normal operation of the heart-lung machine.
Before connecting the machine, a blood-thinning drug (anticoagulant) will be used to prevent blood from clotting in the machine. The heart-lung machine works like your heart:
- It transports blood from the upper right chamber of the heart (right atrium) to a special reservoir.
- This storage tank is called an oxygenator and allows oxygen to circulate in the blood. Red blood cells absorb oxygen and change from dark red to bright red.
The filter removes air bubbles in oxygen-rich blood.
- The blood is returned to the body’s main blood vessel, the aorta, through the plastic tube.
- From the aorta, blood passes through the rest of the body and returns to the heart-lung machine.
Heart Surgical Products Cooling Technology
By cooling the heart, the need for oxygen is reduced. This allows the surgeon to work on the heart for 2 to 4 hours without damaging the heart tissue. There are two ways to cool the heart:
- Cools the blood as it passes through the heart-lung machine, which causes the body temperature to drop as the blood flows through the body
- Pour cold saline (saltwater) on the heart
Not all heart operations today require heart-lung machines or extreme cooling.

The electrocardiogram will be used for monitoring throughout the preparation for the operation and the operation itself. Blood tests, urine tests, and chest X-rays may be performed to allow your surgeon to get the latest heart and health conditions.
After you fall asleep completely, insert a tube into your trachea and connect it to a machine called a respirator, which will take over your breathing. The second tube will be inserted through your mouth, throat, and stomach. This prevents fluid and air from accumulating in your stomach, so you won’t feel discomfort and swelling when you wake up. A thin tube called a catheter will be inserted into your bladder to collect all the urine produced during the operation.
The intravenous (IV) line (a needle with a needle attached) will be inserted into the vein. This will be used to provide you with anesthesia before and during the operation. A special line will be inserted into the artery to monitor your blood pressure and take a blood sample.
