Health and Safety of Bangladesh’s Garment Workers

Bangladesh has approximately 4,500 garment factories with more than four million mostly young women workers and is the world’s second-biggest exporter of clothing, with garments making up 80% of its $24 billion annual exports. Bangladeshi women work in harsh conditions at the garment factories with minimal or no workplace health and safety regulations, programs, policies, or practices.

During this presentation, Dr. Alamgir will outline the chronology of factory disasters, actions, and responsibilities of local and western stakeholders, and progresses made so far. He will summarize the findings of a recent baseline survey conducted by the Western retailers and share the research of two of his graduate students who are now in Bangladesh conducting a study on workers injured in the Rana Plaza building collapse.
