Dementia and memory loss in nursing home

The distribution of nursing home vary by region because of the demand and the resource that are available. Region that has high population of seniors that requires LTC has higher demand for nursing facilities. For example, in Florida there are high number of seniors therefore the demand for long term care facilities such as skill nursing home, assistance living, independent living, life care communities, and adult homes are higher demand.

In 1995 California has 1,382, and in 2016 has 118,666. From 1995 to 2016 there have been an 86% increase of nursing home beds in California. The demand for Nursing are increase which drive the demands for more nursing bed.

Occupational Therapist job requires them to mainly focus on improving patient’s ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) and Physical Therapist focuses on improving a patient’s ability to perform movement of the human body. PT, OT and ST all would together to improve the lives of patient especially in Skill Nursing Facility that demands more health care service. California is one of the warm states and seniors (65 and over) are drawn to location with high tempature rate, rather than lower.

Many patients/ residents that are in SNF are disabled. It is important for the staff to wear name tags because many patients has Alzheimer/dementia and memory loss problem, this will make it easier for patient to communicate with staff. The handrails in the hallways and grab bars in the bathroom are safety devices use to enable patients to maintain balance and lessen fatigue while standing or moving around the facility.
